The garage is the place where a lot of carpentry and other kinds of building work takes place. Whether your profession involves carpentry or you do it just for fun, the garage floor is no place for all the hammering and nailing that you have to do. Not only is this torture for your hands, knees, and back, it doesn’t provide you with the support you need for perfecting your work. Instead, you should be using a garage workbench as a platform for all the work that you do. Building your own garage workbench can be done in one afternoon.

To build a garage workbench all you need is some wood and some bolts and screws. It is best to avoid using nails for your workbench since these can loosen over a period of time. Loose nails in a garage workbench are not a safe environment. For a simple workbench the only wood that you need is a plank of wood to be the surface of the workbench and four 2x4’s to serve as the legs. Make sure that the 2x4’s are the same length so that your workbench does not wobble. A good length for the legs is about thirty-one inches. This will allow your work bench to stand at about two and a half feet tall. Of course, if you need a higher workbench you can lengthen the 2x4’s.

Since you are building your own garage workbench, you have the freedom to design it however you wish. You can keep it simple, similar to a dining table. Or, you can make it more complex, adding compartments and drawers for storing your tools. The decision is up to you.

As you build your garage workbench, keep in mind that you will be doing a lot of work on the bench. Don’t spend a lot of time making it look perfect because it is bound to get messed up again. The most important thing is that it is sturdy and durable enough for you to do your work.
